Decision Making

The hiring decision no one will question

Opened by Marcus · 12 July 2026

You're about to make a senior hire. Your instinct says yes. The team says yes. The board says yes. Everyone agrees. The question is not whether the decision is right. The question is whether the agreement is real — or whether the cost of disagreeing with you is higher than anyone in the room is willing to bear. How do you distinguish genuine alignment from the silence of power?

Genuine alignment sounds different. It includes conditions, caveats, concerns. Unanimous silence usually means the room has optimised for safety, not for truth. I've learned to be suspicious of my own easy wins.

What I've done: create a channel where disagreement can arrive privately, after the room. Some of my best course corrections came from someone who waited three days to tell me what they couldn't say in front of others.
