When the founder will not let go

Opened by Livia · 9 July 2026

In family enterprises and founder-led organisations, there is a pattern that almost everyone sees and almost no one can name aloud: the founder who built the organisation is also the constraint preventing it from evolving. The founder is not wrong. They built something real. Their judgment has been validated by success. But the environment has changed, the organisation has grown, and the way decisions used to be made no longer serves the scale. How do you begin a conversation that the founder experiences as an ending?

I think the hardest truth is that this conversation may need to be had by the founder with themselves first. Until they can name what they're afraid of losing, no one else's framing will land honestly.

The founder is often protecting the organisation from what they've seen go wrong elsewhere. The conversation has to acknowledge that their caution is real wisdom — and that the conditions have genuinely changed.
