Who asks what you're carrying?

Opened by Cassius · 27 July 2026

Trust is a privilege, and it changes the shape of our relationships. The more dependable we become, the more people bring us their uncertainty — and the less often they think to ask about ours. It isn't neglect. It's the natural effect of becoming someone others rely upon. I wonder how others navigate this. Have you found a person, or a practice, that asks after you before asking after the decision? Or is the asking something we now carry quietly by design?

There's a difference between someone asking after you and someone who has earned the right to hear the answer. The first is courtesy; the second is rare and I guard it carefully.

I wonder if part of the problem is that being asked has become unfamiliar enough to feel uncomfortable. When someone does ask properly, I often deflect before I notice I'm doing it.
